Your Electric Co-Op Pays You for Being a Member!

A Gift From You, For You

At Bartholomew County REMC, you are not just a member, you are also part owner of the cooperative. BCREMC was formed over 85 years ago to ensure you have a reliable source of electricity, not to make a profit.

Therefore, any remaining revenue after expenses, known as margins, is issued as capital credits to our member owners. The amount you receive is in direct proportion to the amount of electricity you used during the years retired. This year, your board of directors approved a $1,066,915 capital credit refund from the years 1994, 1995, 1997 and 1998. If you were a BCREMC member during these years you will see the refund on your mid-December or first of January bill applied as a credit. Happy Holidays from BCREMC!

Your Electric Co-Op Pays You for Being a Member!

It’s that time of year for you to get the credit you deserve for sustaining your local electric cooperative! We have issued capital credit refunds as a bill credit to members who received electric service during 1994-1995 and/or 1997-1998. To reduce administrative costs and postage, active members will not receive checks. If you qualify for a refund, you will see it listed on your bill statement as “Capital Credit Refund”.

Bartholomew County REMC has retired $742,975 from 1997 and 1998. The refund also includes $323,940 retired from Hoosier Energy, our wholesale power provider from 1994 and 1995. These capital credits are a return of your investment in BCREMC.

You might not realize it, but when you signed up to receive electric service from Bartholomew County REMC you became a member—and owner—of an electric utility. While investor-owned utilities return profits to their investors, electric co-ops operate on a not-for-profi t basis.

Therefore, any remaining revenue after expenses, known as margins, are issued as capital credits to our member-owners. The amount you receive is in direct proportion to the amount of electricity you used during the years retired. Detailed records are maintained to show how much margin each member is allocated during the years of service.

Margins are kept as working capital, for approximately 25 years to operate the cooperative, before being paid out to members.

All members, who purchase power from Bartholomew County REMC, provide funds to help fi nance our operations. Our annual capital credit retirements occur at the end of the year if the board determines it is financially feasible for the cooperative.

Bartholomew County REMC is pleased to report that your cooperative is financially stable and proud to return capital credits to you, our members.
