Power surges are sudden, powerful increases in voltage that can damage or destroy household appliances and electronic equipment. While lightning is dramatic in effect, it is by no means the major cause of power surges. Birds, animals and trees interfering with power lines, auto accidents involving utility poles, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners and many other factors can cause momentary surges or other power irregularities.

Whole house surge protection
Protect your whole house with meter base surge protection.  REMC will install a surge protector on your meter or meter base to protect your home from power surges. 
The price is $125 + tax and a $35 trip charge for installation.

The surge protector that is installed offers a $5000 per item, $50,00 per failure replacement warranty and is protected for 10 years from the date of installation on the following connected items:
 

** Electronic devices are covered by the service entry device if that is where the surge comes into the home.  However, surges can come through other paths such as phone lines and cable connections.  If the surge comes through the meter base unit, electronics will be covered.  If the surge comes in through other means such as through phone or cable, then the electronics are vulnerable. 

In house surge protection is also available to protect surges that may come through cable or phone lines.
